Can't go back to turn-based strategy games after years of playing EU4.

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 08:28 PM PST

I tried playing Civ 5 for the first time in years and I just can't. After playing grand strategy games for so long, Civ seems more like a children's game than a real strategy game. It requires zero conscious thought to play even on the higher difficulties and I found myself just mindlessly clicking the Next Turn button for several hours. There's no real conflict in Civ unlike the constant conflict in EU4 and HOI4. Anyone else have a similar experience after playin grand strategy games like EU4 for a while?

Title. I'm thinking of doing it to grab as much land as I can with Siberian Frontier, then move back to St. Petersburg. Is it worth it?

Ashanti Universalis Dev Diary 1: New Tags and Borders

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 03:38 PM PST

As an avid African history buff, my excitement was immeasurable when Origins was first announced. Africa prior to Origins was in a really sad state and clearly incomplete. Perhaps there was no better example of just how underdeveloped the region was than the area of Modern Ghana. This region, the size of Great Britain which saw the dramatic rise and fall of multiple fascinating empires, is composed of 8 provinces. Half of these provinces are uncolonized, while the other half belong to Bono and Dagbon, two states which are woefully flavorless. While I thought Origins as a whole was pretty cool, I was quite disappointed to see that one of my favorite regions of the world remained in such a sad position. So, I decided to make a mod focused entirely on Ghana to allow people to play as the incredible kingdoms, confederacies, and empires that ruled Ghana in the early modern period. I started the project yesterday, and here is what I have so far.

Check out the map here! Culture map here!

So far, I have added 12 new tags and 15 new provinces. Additionally, 8 new cultures have been added. Akan, once a single culture, has now been split into a culture group with 6 sub-cultures. I also plan to add an additional culture, Ewe, in the West African culture group, which will appear via event around 1600 in the southeast region, as well as more revolter tags like Larteh and a theocratic Guang-cultured state in Dagbon.

So, without further adiu, let's talk about what was going on in early modern Ghana. The story of Early-Modern Ghana begins with the migration of the Akan. The Akan were a people fleeing from the chaos of the decline of the Empire of Ouagadou (often called the Ghana Empire) in the early 12th Century. The ancestors of the Akan settled in the north of the region, and created a kingdom called Bono Manso. Over the next few centuries, many Bono people began settler further into Ghana, where they came into contact with the Guang, another ethnic group that had settled in Ghana a few hundred years earlier. Through a combination of conflict and assimilation, the Akan expanded further into southern Ghana, establishing many new states and creating several new subcultures.

A new trade node has been created to better reflect the trade relationship between the states of the Volta river basin and their neighbors to the north and South. Trade map mode here At the game's start date, the most powerful Akan state is Denkyira. Denkyira is a martial society, which has benefited economically from its position acting as a middleman in the gold trade. It holds a tributary status over several of its smaller neighbors.

The most famous of these neighbors are the Ashanti, who, at this point, are not united into a single kingdom. In real life, they were actually divided among a great number of city states, but we'll settle for including only the three most important cities: Juaben, Mampong, and Kwamaan (now known as Kumasi.) Each of these states will possess a focus tree with an emphasis on first casting off Denkyira dominance, then on the formation of a united Ashanti empire, and finally on external expansion and economic stability.

To the Denkyira's south lies the numerous coastal states, including Aowin, Wasa, Fante, and the Ga-cultured OPM, Accra. Similarly to the Ashanti, the Fante and Ga were still divided among numerous city states during this time, but this has been simplified to reduce excessive border gore. In the early game, each of these states must be careful to avoid falling under Denkyira hegemony. And, things only get more complicated when the Europeans arrive. Two small provinces were added on the coast to represent placements for European trading forts. Like in much of Africa during the time, European colonialism in Ghana did not take the form of scrambling for Africa, but rather operating small military forts from which they could safely engage in trade. Events and missions will be added for both colonial and Ghanaian nations relating to these profit-seeking ventures. In the East, the last independent Guang kingdom, Gonja, clings on for its life. It is a tributary of the Dagbon, but, like in real life, perhaps the Gonja will be able to reverse this relationship, and supercede the Dagbon as the regional power of the mid-Volta region. Or, perhaps they can reunite with their fellow Guans further down the Volta. That is, unless the militant Akyem and powerful Akwamu kingdoms have anything to say about it. Thanks for reading. Please let me know if you have any further questions about the future of the mod's development.

This includes adding new trade nodes, adding or removing certain links/connections, and adding or removing starting Trade Centers.
