Calling all imperial councillors! Many of our linked guides pre-Dharma (1.26) are missing strategy regarding mission trees. Any help in putting together updated guides is greatly appreciated! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, chances are you've used the EU4 wiki and know how valuable a resource it can be. When you answer a question, consider checking whether the wiki has that information where you would expect to find it, and adding to the wiki if it does not. In fact, anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.

Africa Universalis Dev Diary 1: Zimbabwe

(Salām laka!) Greetings and welcome to our first Africa Universalis Development Diary! In case you aren't familiar with this project, Africa Universalis is working to overhaul all of Africa to bring light to a region seeped in historic and cultural heritage, which hasn't been fully represented within Europa Universalis to date. Africa Universalis aims to be the most comprehensive Africa mod for EU4, which is being accomplished with rigorous research and extensive attention to detail. This will permit the Dark Continent to be represented as it always should have been.

Africa Universalis is an open-source project, available for anyone to use and reference, though we ask that you give credit where it is due and let us know via PM or our Discord (see below)! We also ask that if you use our work you allow us to use yours as well.

Before we get into the contents of the Dev Diary I want to introduce the Africa Universalis Modding Community (or AUMC). This is our Discord channel for modders, researchers, players, and other folks who have a specific interest in Africa or the Africa Universalis project. It was started as a place for people to seek answers for their Africa questions and share sources, maps, info, inspirations, and other EU4-Africa related discussion. We'd love to have you join us; and just a tidbit if you do, the more you interact the higher up the ranks you can go!

    https://discord.gg/at96Km5

A few last things from me, it is my pleasure to introduce you to the team that makes up the Africa Universalis and AUMC team…

    • -LeRoi6: Bana Balute, Head of the Council (Team Leader), Cartographer, Architect, Builder, Nation Maker
    • -Ajsieg: Gärad (co-creator) Ekpo (Moderator), Hand of the King, Cartographer, Herald, Librarian, Scholar
    • -ML8991: Ekpo, Seller of Purple (and all other colors), Master of Trade, Keeper of Names
    • -Drizzt: Ekpo, Speaker of the Council
    • -Bukhara: Ekpo, Cartographer, Explorer
    • -Chairman Meow: Ekpo , Council Support

Additionally, we like to credit some mods/modders we have with permission to use their work:

Without further ado, I pass the torch as we begin our journey into Africa Universalis with the gold mines of Zimbabwe, LeRoi out…

    The State of Mutapa

"Please note that the shown borders and nations are not final, and thus subject to change. This DD will only cover the Zimbabwe region"

The old Mutapa that you loved to conquer for access to its gold mines and ivory underwent a bit of a transformation when it was implemented in Africa Universalis. In vanilla EU4 Mutapa is represented as a whole by itself and a single weak subject — Butua. In AU, that single weak subject finds itself in the immediate company of seven other subjects — Lozvi, Manyika, Barue, Tete, Sena, Korekore, and Tande. Furthermore, Korekore has two subjects of their own — Choma and Nyombwe. The nations of Mutapa, Korekore, and Lozvi also find themselves ruled by the several members of the Mbire* dynasty. This splintering of Mutapa and sharing of a dynasty better represents the decentralized rule of the region that was seen during the reign of Mutapa's early rulers.

As work continues on this region, the rise of Changamire and arrival of the Portuguese will be key points in the region we want to represent. The specific details of these implementations have not been decided yet, as the AUMC community is currently working on finishing the province work for the remainder of East Africa.

*This was previously designated the Mwenemutapa dynasty, despite the fact that Mwenemutapa was the Mutapan kingdom's name and a royal title , rather than a dynasty. This was because research found that Mutapa's rulers were generally referenced as "belonging to the Mutapa dynasty," and thus it was decided to simply use Mwenemutapa as the dynasty. However, further discussion on the matter led to its change to the Mbire dynasty.

(We're representing the early ruler's decentralized hold on the region by having family vassals/controlling the local population.) We hope to show the rise of Changamire and the arrival of the Portuguese.

We decided to make Mutota's ruler, Matope, the ruler in 1444. While reign dates are unclear, the timeline of the region is better expressed with Matope being the ruler.

    Northern Zimbabwe

"The heart of Mutapa is home to a sizable amount of wealth, and a wealth of tiny provinces."

The Mutapan kingdom was ruled from Northern Zimbabwe, and was thus one of the regions in East Africa most influenced by the kingdom's existence. Within this area, the Kingdom of Mutapa established itself among the local Tavara and Dande populations. The Shona** dominance of the region is readily observed in the fact that every state in Zimbabwe finds itself under the thumb of Mutapa. This particular portion of Zimbabwe was quite prosperous and exerted notable influence over East African trade, and this well-positioned prosperity would eventually attract significant attention from the Portuguese in the 17th century. Unfortunately, as was too often the case, this attention brought war to Mutapa. The Portuguese pushed into the region and exerted their military might, conquering swathes of land that would eventually be doled out as Prazos. These were large estates that were leased out to Prazeros - the colonists, settlers, and traders of Portugal. As previously noted, the AUMC intends to implement mechanics and events to simulate the historical Portuguese influence in this region.

While the course of history was unkind to Mutapa, the wealth and connectivity of this region ought to permit Mutapa to become a major East Africa power, provided that their leaders are competent enough to navigate past the obstacles that lie in their path.

**Fun fact, the term 'Shona' was from the Matabele (Ngoni), who migrated to the highveld after the timeframe of EU4. The Shona called themselves 'Kalanga'.

    Tags:

    • Mutapa
    • Korekore - Shona vassal to Mutapa.
    • Choma - Small Tavara community under Mutapa.
    • Nyombwe - A Shona version of Choma so to speak. Interacted with Choma.
    • Tande - representing the Dande peoples that were under less Mutapa influence.
    • Tete - Swahili city-state vassal to Mutapa. It was granted to Portugal in 1531.

    Southern Zimbabwe

"While the Rozvi may bear the Mutapan yoke in 1444, history has shown that they have the potential to usurp their masters and take command of their fate."

Southern Zimbabwe is a lot less complex than the north, but contains a few important places, like the Butua villages (Khami, Dhlo Dhlo, and Naletale) and the Great Zimbabwe area, although it would decline as a trade center***. Finally, this area contains shrines to Mwari, the supreme god of the Zimbabwe region.

    Tags:

    • Butua - Mutapa Vassal
    • Lozvi - Mutapa Vassal. Changamire would be appointed the governor here during Matope's rule, and Changamire would spark a succession crisis in 1490.

***Great Zimbabwe would continue to exist as a religious center, although more as a ruin. During the Karanga migrations, one group, the Nemanwa, became closely connected with the ruins.

    Eastern Zimbabwe

"You can see some new river additions that we have added too!"

Eastern Zimbabwe in 1444 was the only area not affected by Mutapa at this time (with the exception of the Lower Zambezi). However, it would eventually come under the fold during the rule of Mukombwe/Changamire in the 1490's. This area was also wealthy and was a big producer of gold, especially in the highlands.

    Tags:

    • Manyika - Independent Kingdom. Produced a huge amount of gold, iron, and copper.
    • Quiteve - Independent Kingdom.
    • Madanda - Independent Kingdom.
    • Barue - Mutapa Vassal.
    • Sena - Swahili City-State subject to Mutapa. Granted to Portugal in 1531.

    Religion

One of our goals in Africa Universalis is to break up the Fethistist religion, so regional religions are allowed to be brought up and allow for some regionality. Zimbabwe is one of those areas we are separating from the Fetishist block. The Mhondoro religion represents the local Mhondoro spirit ancestors under the supreme god Mwari. We've named it Mhondoro (Based from the Riches of Africa mod) as we will use the cult mechanic to represent the various Mhondoros (as well as Mwari).

    Religion's Bonuses:

Yearly Inflation Reduction: -0.10 (*Insert Zimbabwe Inflation Meme*/Combat the high number of gold provinces present)

Yearly Prestige: +1.00 (Since Mhondoro are the ancestor spirits)

(Note: This is still in the works, so not all bonuses/mechanics are fleshed out)

    Cultures

"I wonder why Madanda is cut off in the picture thonk. Also it's Tonga time."

Finally, with culture, we have broken up the vanilla group in southeastern Africa into regional groups. The Shona Group contains the various groups/languages found in the region. Changes that would happen to the region is the migration of the Shangwe groups to the Citonga area (which is part of a Zambian culture group), the rise of the Rozvi, and the Portugal Prazos creating a hodgepodge resulting in the Sena/Nyungwe peoples, among others.

    Terrain

"One thing we're changing in Africa is the addition of the woods terrain to separate forests from the jungles of West and Central Africa. "

Zimbabwe is host to a variety of terrains, making an outside invader have to choose between the flat north or the direct elevated eastern parts to the coveted southern trade centers. Historically, Portugal found it easier to penetrate Mutapa, but the flat north allows for better development of gold markets instead of controlling the actual mines.

    Trade Goods

"That's very cash money of Zimbabwe"

It is no denial that Zimbabwe is very rich in resources. It was one of the many reasons Portugal came to the Zambezi valley. The escarpments host a large amount of iron, copper, and lots of gold. Balancing will be critical when testing this region, and we will adjust accordingly. I will also point out that we try to represent trade goods that are lacking in vanilla Africa, like glass (aka glass beads) and cotton.

We hope you've appreciated this Dev Diary, and look forward to more to come!

EU4 Achievements Excel File (After 1.30 Austria update)

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 08:29 AM PDT

    Dear eu4 players,

After hundreds hours of gameplay; I decided to get the achievements completely. But neither the achievement list on steam, nor the one at wiki page of the game; is user-friendly. I mean I can not apply any filter on them.

When I'm going to start a new campaign; it'll be better to planify on which ones to focus while the gameplay. I prefer to not seeing the achievements that I got already while playing; . For ex: if I'm gonna play on Indian nations; Europe related achivements aren't interesting for me. Or if I'm gonna be France; Japanese achievements are meaningless.

So here is the excel file that you can filter the achievements, see the starting conditions, requirements, notes on the wiki page. You can arrange the achievements you want to focus; according to the updates, difficulties, best starting countries(must ones and really really best ones*) and your current status on achievements.

    Link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1m7wh0h0IJnVNgdZai-LBzFF678dEljxD?usp=sharing

I'll try to keep it up to date as possible as I can.

Thanks, and have a nice gameplay.

*: For ex: Core-Fu achivement; you should "Force a nation to revoke 5 cores in once peace deal as Corfu". There isn't any obligation to start as a specific country; but since the Corfu province is in the Venice state; it's really really best to start to campaign as Venice.
