Unpopular Opinion: I wish the game was more historically railroaded

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 03:47 AM PST

Yes, I know this is one of the most unpopular opinions amongst EU4 players but please hear me out before mass downvoting :P

It's fine when one or two funky things happen, but if you end up having a Europe in which say: Poland takes the local noble, Lithuania + Denmark allies Novgorod and Crimea goes to the Ottomans (none of these things actually happened), then you've basically taken Russia and the PLC out of the picture and ensured an Ottoman Ruthenia.

If the Iberian wedding never fires the entirety of European balance is negated, and they often can't even take Granada if they've allied the whole of North Africa + Ottomans. Likewise, England is scared to attack Scotland half the time so Great Britain never forms.

France never reach their historical peak and often get wrecked after the Burgundian Inheritance.

The Ottoman Empire never explodes and a lategame Ottoman Explosion on Ming levels with events that give them extremely high autonomy in the Balkans and Egypt would actually be very accurate. The Janissaries should also be limited by tech.

The Reformation is still totally afraid of touching Scandinavia which means Scandinavia becomes a bastion of Catholicism.

Let's not get started on Portugal's choice of colonisation, preferring Mexico and the Caribbean to Africa, Asia and Brazil.

I know you guys will say this adds "flavour" and to an extent, it definitely wouldn't be fun to have the same scenario every single game. At the same time, whether I'm playing wide or tall if I look at the map and see no Russia, no Spain, no Great Britain, no Portuguese expansion, no France sometimes, the Ottomans in Poland and no PLC...well, it breaks all immersion for me and just feels like I'm playing a meme.

As I said, I know this is unpopular just expressing how I feel in the hope someone else feels the same way ;p
