Why the base game is unplayable?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 02:58 AM PDT

    Unpopular opinion, I think, but...

Now that, Epic is giving away EU4 for free, I saw so much hate that the base game alone is not playable without DLC, and it's completely "trash".

Going back to the past, during the game's release, the game received very high ratings. So, how did it suddenly become unplayable over the years? There's a whole psychological trick here, because once someone has played with the DLC, it's clear that for them the base game will already be lacking of its mechanics (that's why it's DLC), but new players who bought only the base game, unaware of these things won't feel it and will have fun. If they like the game, of course they can buy some DLC, because they also change a lot.

About Paradox's DLC policy. A lot of people take a superficial look. They see a long list of DLC, and it creates a negative impression, but they don't know that it's the result of 8 long years of development. Really, few studios can boast of such a long period of support for the same title. During this time, 17 DLCs were released changing the gameplay (music & graphic DLCs not considered), which gives us an expense of about 15 dollars (for the full price) per half a year. The DLCs aren't that expensive, and the older ones are often at significant discounts. Developers are humans and no one would develop a game for 8 years for free, after all. In light of today's subscriptions (Wow, FFIV) and much more aggressive monetization policies (EA, e.g FIFA), paradox really isn't bad and has taken a pretty fair tactic for me. I didn't bother about DLCs quality, because it's well known that there were some good ones and some bad ones (or buggy ones).

Might as well give it away. Steam key below (I'm from UK but think it should work anywhere):

    C9VLW-04TE2-5C3KI

Please let me know if you redeem it so I can mark it as such.

Edit: I've been made aware that bots scan reddit posts for keys and snatch them up so there is a good chance it didn't go to one of the fine residents of the sub but to someone praying on idiots like myself.

Sorry guys, I'll follow the advice from u/DuGalle next time and pm it to the 1st commenter. Hopefully the next person can learn from my mistake.
