It's a shame that forming Russia as Novgorod turns you into a monarchy

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 12:55 PM PDT

Novgorod was one of the most democratic republics of the era, and is recognized as such by the game by getting the unique government reform "Veche Republic". To quote from the game itself:

This state is governed by a Veche, a council with the highest legislative and judicial authority consisting of Boyars, Merchants and even commoners.

Should Novgorod, in an alternative history, have defended successfully against Muscovite aggression and eventually turned the tables against them, they would likely have stayed a republic. Uniting the Rus is not something that could only be achieved by a monarchy. It doesn't seem at all unreasonable that a hypothetical ascendant Novgorod would have maintained it's republican principles.

Therefore, it's quite a shame that Novgorod can't form Russia and stay a republic. Right now, they always turn into a Tsardom. Prussia's unique government form has a republican version, so why not Russia?

It takes a bit of the fun out of playing Novgorod. A rich merchant republic expanding to encompass all the Rus would probably choose to adapt how it presents itself, and thus "form russia". But right now, it can't do that without abandoning it's roots entirely.

The AI should prefer natural/regional borders.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 08:31 AM PDT

It would be cool if the AI used rivers/mountains ranges/desert frontiers, as well as regional borders (e.g. border between China and Indochina) as guidelines for where it wants to expand. It would also make the game much more realistic, since, for instance, you would rarely see France/Spain eager to cross the Pyrenees, Bengal into Tibet, etc. Plus it might help with the fact that AI never unites China when Mingsplosion occurs.

Has anyone else seen this before? There were no electors and an opm was the emperor in the 1600s. I have no idea how this happened as I wasn't paying attention to central Europe, I assume that it happened after the league wars. This is my first dismantling and it seems a bit cheap and easy.
