Debt, corruption and unrest leading to collapse and balkanization

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 02:58 PM PDT

Aren't you tired of defeating the Ottomans(or any big country) in a huge war, destroying all their army and occupying all their country, only for you to be able to take a few provinces and then let them recover in just a few years and start all over again?

Well I am. I was thinking that some kind of disaster mechanics should trigger once you suffer a huge defeat or lose a huge amount of money (the latter usually comes together with the former). Just think of what happens to the Chinese when they get low Mandate: their armies become useless, and they start balkanizing pretty quickly.

Well, I think this should happen to any country that loses a huge war and/or is heavily in debt. Think of it this way: if a country cannot pay their own troops why would they fight effectively against rebels? Wouldn't the troops rebel themselves too? In this situation your country has been humiliated so badly that not even your troops are loyal to you anymore. So they lose to the rebels. Quickly the rebels break your country and it balkanizes.

I know that rebels can break a country but for that to happen you need to be an inept since your army will almost always defeat them. So the only thing we need to make this happen is to give maluses to your unit combat stats when you are in a disaster like the one I mentioned. This would lead to big countries like the Ottomans who can sometimes be utterly defeated in a war but still survive to collapse and balkanize. And it would lead to very interesting situations. Can you imagine what the balkanization of great powers can lead to? It will totally change how the game plays after that. It will also make players more wary of what they do in MP too.
