Missions Expanded Dev Diary 08.12.2019 Khorasani, Afghanistani and Transoxiana Mission Trees

Hey Folks! I'm u/Stiopa866, the Lead Developer of Missions Expanded, and in today's Developer Diary for the Missions Expanded mod, we will talk about Unique Mission Trees for Timurid Princes.

    1.8 Release

As some of you may know, we released Missions Expanded 1.8 "Silk & Gunpowder" last week. It is certainly one of our best releases, if not the best one so far. But no release can come without some issues. Bugs have sneaked into our codes and there are fixes that are being adressed as we speak and a lot of which are going to be fixed by the next hotfix, which will also contain new mission trees that couldn't make it into the proper release. That brings us to...

    The New Mission Trees

In this part of the dev diary, LordVarangian will talk about his new mission trees for Khorasan, Transoxiana and Afghanistan :)

    ---

Hello there Mission Tree Enthuisiasts! LordVarangian again, and this time I shall talk again about the Timurid Princes, most importantly this time, Khorasan, Transoxiana and Afghanistan, since they all have received new shiny mission trees.

First one I shall talk about is the great scholar, the person who gave Samarkand its spot after Timur's reign, Ulugh Beg and Transoxiana.

    https://preview.redd.it/ngv8tfk7rf341.png?width=533&format=png&auto=webp&s=cbd545e1662917f105be2ae7d094c5045a9a4a0d

As you can see, the tree isn't something big, one of the reasons being that the generic Timurid tree provides a good chunk of flavour already. The other reason being that it forces you to form a nation, specifically the Timurids, mainly because there isn't much recorded history of Transoxiana after 1444. Adjustments were made to events as well. Now, Ulugh Beg will not literally claim the Empire and form Timurids, instead that mission is a way to complete the Claim the Empire mission. One mission specifically I wanted to talk about is the Relations with China one.

    https://preview.redd.it/qg7x83ttrf341.png?width=343&format=png&auto=webp&s=c0dd4642be0f0a8231189adfa87235732513831f

As you can see, I've made the mission show you the rewards in the screen, mainly for convenience.

Now, moving to the mountains where many great leaders have met their match. In Kabul, a man, quite possibly fictional, sits eagerly, waiting for his chance.

    https://preview.redd.it/vw0dw414sf341.png?width=531&format=png&auto=webp&s=2e6bc20d505c6e76b037a69f7aba8170334497d4

To begin with, you might have noticed two missions: The Ruler Dilemma and Graveyard of Empires missions. The latter is self-explanatory, but the former is a quick way to get rid of the Timurid dynasty out of Afghanistan, replacing it with a more Afghan one, one which I cannot spoil. As for the Graveyard of Empires, I decided to shake up things, and add a whole branch dedicated to you being the demise of everyone trying to invade you.

Moving now onto Khorasan, where an ambitious man awaits for his chance to become the Shah of the Empire. Babur bin Baysunkur, quite possibly the greatest out of all the princes.

    https://preview.redd.it/mit61ehktf341.png?width=519&format=png&auto=webp&s=bf88b9490ffda24b895ecea791a6c6bbbdb75f80

You might think this tree is too small for an ambitious man like him, however, he is the only one that has access to an incident tree himself. (For clarification, an incident tree is a special mission tree to which you can opt into)

    https://preview.redd.it/t1tmbn35tf341.png?width=270&format=png&auto=webp&s=2245ddc56552aca8b6d4f2bf8bf5fe0090f961a0

This is the start of the rivalry between Khorasan and Transoxiana.

Unlike many incident trees though, this one has no downside, other than the fact you're fighting a neighbour who is much stronger than you.

That's all for me for today, see you when I'll be once again presenting nations that I'll be working on.

    ----------

We have also prepared mission trees for Fars and Ajam, about which we might talk about them on another occasion. :)

    The End

My personal takeaway from playing through a whole game as Ainu.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 04:49 AM PST

I am still new to playing EU4, figuring out the rest of the mechanics but...

Developing provinces is a VERY potent mechanic that shouldn't be ignored - even if you don't need to force an institution to pop-up. There's a very big game-changing difference I have observe from just having 20 development average provinces, to 30 or 40. I lag behind in tech for the first couple of decades when I pumped all my monarch points into developing every province to 30 minimum, but I end up managing to afford hiring advisors to increase my monarch points to help in catching up with tech advances later on, and generate more income to upgrade buildings, and keep enough as savings to embrace institutions. In a way EU4 does have research still linked to average economic development per province like in EU3.

I only kept my nation strictly to the Hokkaido province. The capital is at 90 development by the end of the game, and every other province is at 50. I end up defeating Japan, Korea, Manchu and Ming repeatedly in battles.

Also talking about military....you don't defeat Japan with espionage (keeping them from staking claim with your provinces) or brute force them with a land army. You defeat Japan with a navy. Develop all of Hokkaido into big cities and then raise a giant navy. As long as you have your fleet composed mainly of galleys with a bit of big ships to tank hits for the galleys, you will be able to defeat Japan's navy and blockage all of its ports.

Oh blockage, damn...it's so damned powerful compared to EU3. I blockaded all of Japan's ports and left it for decades, and the coastlines get devastated. Most of Japan's provinces are facing the sea, and the devastation robs Japan of its income and manpower.

I was crazy surprised when I did my own thing, developed my cities and teched up, and then I looked back at Japan and noticed that the 60K army it had, had been reduced to just......3K. With a devastation going up to 90%+ for its provinces.

With my mere 25K army I walked in and then conquered everything. Then I annexed Kyoto and a few surrounding territories and then installed a puppet vassal as I repeat the process. Wait for Japan to declare war at me, turn Japan into Cernobyl via blockade, walk in, annex.

Also because of the devastation Japan ends up lagging terribly behind in tech. Conquering them gets easier each time.

So guys, don't get discouraged about developing your provinces and focusing on navy. It's fun as heck playing as a tiny weeny nation bullying all the big boys into submission!

So after three hours starting and restarting game . . . I couldn't expect less than this. Sadly, I didn't achieve conquering Britannia and restoring the Roman Empire, but I'm happy with this.
