Just finished up a Mare Nostrum run as France. Towards the end it became clear that I was going to run out of time if I didn't start treating truces as suggestions that I could ignore. I also ran into the problem that my PU subject, The Commonwealth, owned some of coastline around the black sea that I needed for the achievement. Even if I had started integrating ASAP, it wouldn't be finished until 100+ years to late. With all this in mind, this is how I imagine the last few peace conferences between myself and the Ottomans went:

Ottomans: "Your Majesty, the She-Devil of France, as much as it pains us to do so, we cannot contend with the might of your armies. We will concede Persia, the remainder of the Levant, and all of our Crimean holdings to your empire and will withdraw completely from Europe to our territories in Arabia and east Africa."

France: "Hhhmmm, yeah that sounds great, but actually we don't want all of Crimea. You can keep this one tiny province on the north coast of the Black Sea. The one right next to our Polish subjects."

Ottomans: "Are you sure? There's almost no development there, no taxes for us the collect, no men to press into service. All it would do is serve to completely cut your territory around the Sea of Azov in half. We're in no position to argue and have no problem ceding the province to you."

France: "Yes I'm quite sure. Actually, I refuse to sign this peace unless you keep the territory."

Ottomans: "Well, far be it from us to stop you from making strategic mistakes."

France: "Perfect. Now that this peace deal is signed and my troops have moved just outside your borders, it is my honor to declare war on you!"

    Ottomans: "Excuse me, WHAT?!?!"

Rome: "Also, we're the Roman Empire now."

    Ottomans: "Since when?!"

Rome: "Since about 20 seconds before we declared war on you."

    Ottomans: "You cannot be serious!"

Rome: "You know what, you're right. It's clear that this was a foolish idea and we surrender. We offer up all our Polish subject's territory next to yours along the coast of the Black Sea as recompense."

Ottomans: "You must be insane to think we'd accept such an offer! The only surrender we will accept is the full return of our cores across all of Anatolia and Greece, you giving up all your colonial holdings across the Americas, and reparations for countless lives you've slaughtered in your imperialist conquest of our lands!"

Rome: "The eighteen thousand men you call an army just got stack wiped and I have over one hundred thousand men laying siege to your capital."

Ottomans: "On second thought, we gracefully accept your surrender and return of our rightful land in the northern Black Sea."

Revolutionary Rome: "Fantastic! Now that that's taken care of, I've changed my mind and want those lands back."

    Ottomans: "You must be joking..."

    Of Heavies and Galleys

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 06:53 PM PST

    Of Heavies and Galleys

Seeing discussion on whether or not Galleys are capable of dealing with Heavies, I decided to run some tests.

TL:DR - Ingame galleys are functional in inland seas from tech 3 through tech 8 and from tech 14 to tech 24, then at tech 18, 21, and 24 they become dominant in coastal settings and for tech 21 and 24 they can be used in the open ocean, but only against forces who have not yet unlocked the next heavy at the next tech (19, 22, and 25).

3 Different Charts depicting which vessels fought which and winners of each match up.

Showing which ships operate the best in each naval terrain by tech.

    Methodology:

I created 3 custom nations, one to handle the Heavies, one to handle the Galleys, and one to do neither. Neither the Heavy nor the Galley nation had modifiers for naval combat. The Heavies nation recieved 5 fleets of 10 Heavies, the Galleys nations 3 fleets of 30 Galleys and 2 fleets of 10 Galleys. The battles were 10Hv30G in Open Sea, Coastal Sea, and Inland Sea, and 10Hv10G in Coastal Sea and Inland Sea. I would park the fleets in port to repair and reach max moral then save, tech to the next unlock, save, tech, unlock, save, etc. Then I would load each save, wait for the repairs to finish and order the fleets to sea. Whenever fleets were transiting to the Open Sea, I would tag to the neutral nation to avoid attrition, thus all fleets were at full morale and repair. Once all fleets reached their assigned combat zones, I would start the war. After the battles were over I would load the save at the nect tech level run a new test, thus a test was run at Diplo Tech 3, 9, 10, 14, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, and 25. Note both 10Hv10G battles were only done at tech 3.

    Results:

Tech 3: Heavies won all battles. The fleet gained total condition in both the Coastal 10Hv10G and the Open Sea 10Hv30G, gained sailors (only 6) in the Coastal 10Hv10G. The Heavy fleet captured 1 galley in all but the Inland Sea 10Hv10G, and Open Sea 10Hv30G. Instead they caputed 0 and 2 respectively. The Heavies lost 1 ship in the Coastal 10Hv30G and 2 ships in the Inland Sea 10Hv30G.

The Galleys didn't capture a single ship, lost ships in every engagement, and lost sailors. However they inflicted slightly more condition damage and lost fewer sailors than the Heavies in the Inland Sea 10Hv30G battle and the cost of rebuilding to original composition for both sides was equivalent at 100 ducats each. Additionally the Galleys build faster 1 for 1 and being able to divide the construction between provinces allowing the galley fleet to return to full strength faster. This means galleys would win a war of attrition should the battles be confined to inland seas.

Tech 9: All battles from this point on are 10Hv30G. They will only be referred to by the location. This goes for all following techs as well.

Heavies have a clear advantage winning in Open, Coastal and Inland sea, capturing Galleys in all combat for zero losses.

Tech 10: Heavies won all engagements, capturing ships. One heavy lost in both the coastal and inland engagements.

Tech 14: Heavies won coastal and open sea, lost inland. No heavy losses in the open sea engagement, one galley captured, 13 sunk. 1 heavy lost in the coastal engagement, 2 galleys captured, 12 sunk. Inland Sea engagement saw 4 heavies sunk, for 1 galley sunk. 21 galleys suffered no damage, most damaged galley remaining sat at 68% condition.

Tech 15: Heavies won both coastal and open sea, losing 0 ships and capturing 1 in each engagement. At the inland engagement the heavies lost 4 ships sinking 10. 7 Galleys remained untouched in the inland engagement. Inland sea fleets would cost 200 ducats to replinish heavies, 100 ducats to replenish galleys.

Tech 18: Heavies won in the open sea, lost in both coastal and inland seas. Open sea saw 0 heavy losses for 1 galley captured and 12 sunk. Coastal saw 4 heavies sunk for 3 galleys (200 ducats v 30 ducats). Inland saw 9 heavies sink, 1 heavy captured, and no galleys sunk. Heavy fleet would cost 500 ducats to rebuild.

Tech 19: Heavies won both open sea and coastal engagements. No heavies lost in either, 2 galleys captured in the coastal engagement. 13 galleys sunk in the open sea, 16 sunk in the coastal. 12 galleys sunk in the inland engagement (120 ducats to build) taking 2 heavies (100 ducats to build). Ran a second time, 12 galleys sunk inland, taking 3 heavies. It is close, but I believe the galleys come out on top here.

Tech 21: Galleys won all engagements.... Hmm. 2 heavies captured, 1 sunk vs 5 galleys sunk in open ocean. 3 heavies sunk, 1 captured vs 7 galleys sunk in coastal seas, 3 heavies sunk vs 7 galleys inland.

Tech 22: Heavies won coastal and open sea engagements. In both no hevies sunk, 1 galley was captured and 17 more sunk. Inland 14 galleys sunk with 3 heavies going down as well. 140 ducats to replace the galleys, 150 to replace the heavies.

Tech 24: Heavies won in the open sea engagment lost elsewhere. No galleys captured, 16 sunk for no losses in the open sea. 4 galleys sunk for 3 heavies in the coastal sea. 5 galleys sunk for 3 heavies in the inland sea.

Tech 25: Heavies won all engagements. No heavies sunk. 15 galleys sunk in the open sea engagement with 2 captured, 17 sunk in the coatal engagement, 17 sunk in the inland engagement with 2 captured.

    Conclusion:

Umm. Hmm. So from my knowledge of naval history, one would expect galleys to have dominance in inland sea until atleast the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, however that timeframe falls under the dominance of the Carrack, which excels in all three naval terrains and is most definitely not a galley. In fact Lepanto was the last major engagement between 2 fleets of galleys/galleasses and marks the beginning of the Age of Sail and the decline of oar powered vessels as a whole, seeing them replaced by full-rigged and hybrid vessels. In game it falls squarely at the beginning of a resurgence of oar powered dominance with the galleass unlocking with the next tech up in 1583, after 63 years of sail powered dominance in inland seas. Even more surprising there are periods 1635-48, 1674-87, and 1715-30, where oarpowered vessels expand there dominance beyond inland seas, dominating coastal seas in three aforementioned periods, and dominating open seas for the later two! Granted the Chebeck (Xebec/Zebec) and the Archipelego Frigate (collectively the Swedish Udema, Pojama, Turuma and Hemmema types, with the later two actually giving the appearance of frigates. Additionally there are oared frigates such as the HMS Charles Galley that would fit this category, but I'm not certain a frigate is supposed to win out against a Two Decked Ship-of-the-Line!)

Thus the real life pinnacle of oar-powered ships aligns with the end of the first period they are effectively useless in-game, and the second period of utter inferiority for galleys come immediately after they can beat out ships of the line in open seas.

Somewhat new to eu4 and im wondering, are the ottomans AT ALL beatable unless some really unlucky stuff hits them?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 07:36 PM PST

Currently in an mp game with my friend, im playing as prussia and him as hannover. Between us we're allied to france, muscovy and a couple weaker powers.

Despite this, the ottomans still have 350k men and it hasnt even reached 1600 yet. Our alliance combined is maybe just below 200k and were easily the strongest alliance in the world as of now, we usually get bored of our runs by 1600-1650 so im not familiar with late game downfalls but are the ottomans likely to decline soon or do they tend to reign supreme forever?

Just asking because theyre already practically bordering me after nearly full annexing Hungary over a series of wars and i feel like sooner or later im gonna face an unwinnable war
