Please check our previous Imperial Council thread for any questions left unanswered

Welcome to the Imperial Council of r/eu4, where your trusted and most knowledgeable advisors stand ready to help you in matters of state and conquest.

This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your Ironman game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the master tacticians of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your Ironman save, then you've found the right place!

Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (diplomatic, political, trade, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, ideas, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, ideas, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

Calling all imperial councillors! Many of our linked guides pre-Dharma (1.26) are missing strategy regarding mission trees. Any help in putting together updated guides is greatly appreciated! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, chances are you've used the EU4 wiki and know how valuable a resource it can be. When you answer a question, consider checking whether the wiki has that information where you would expect to find it, and adding to the wiki if it does not. In fact, anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.

You might have gotten used to insanely long sieges caused by weak armies standing on forts for all eternity. This is a bit shorter, but still absurdly long siege, which was continuously maintained by that unlucky Ottoman stack you can see in the pic.

Add a new subject type for ottomans, enough of Ottoman pontic steppe.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 11:40 AM PST

I can go for a long part about how many ottoman pontic steppes there are as ottomans ALWAYS integrate crimea. Them being a march doesn't change it they just break it, turn them into a vassal and later integrate them. Enough. Here is my suggestion: Add a new subject type for ottomans, Himaye

Historical part, ottomans had no ambitions in pontic steppe. Other than few important Crimean trade hubs ottomans always recognised Crimean ownership over the steppe as both of them believed someone descended from Genghis is the true owner of steppes. Some historians even argue ottoman-crimean relationship wasn't a "vassal-overlord" relationship but an alliance with a dominant partner. To better represent here is how "himaye"(ottoman word for protectorate, which is inaccurate for what am I saying but couldn't come up with a different name)

Essentially same as march but different as being:

    • has 33% overlord dev limit rather than 25% of march
    • Can not be turned into a vassal for 50 years (doesn't matter if it was from an event or war)
    • Overlord can choose to not invite them to war at all (not to confused with "ignore" subject preference, they simply don't join war)
    • If overlord lets them they can go offensive wars on their own, or overlord might make them do(shouldn't be hard to implement, similar system to colonies)
    • 10% less cost for technology known by overlord.

    Ai preferences:

    • Overlord always gives them province in their capital region and is much more likely to give neighbouring provinces. (If crimea owns one of those 3 crimean tried hubs an event with low mtth triggers to give them ottomans)
    • Overlord ai won't turn them into a vassal unless it is the age of revolutions

This way, like irl ottomans wont expand to pontic steppe while also having crimea as "vassal". "fate of crimean khanate" event turns them into a himaye instead of march.

As we already started, "himaye" could be a good way to represent aceh sultanate. Currently it is not represented in game afair, as making them into an ottoman march would just result with ottomans integrating them. For those who don't know, aceh was also a ottoman protectorate during the time.

Is there a downside to becoming a theocracy as Spain for a WC run?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 05:24 PM PST

Playing as Spain in 1652, I have about 9k dev with all my PUS (5300 by myself), and I am always running into gov cap issues. The reform for theocracy has come up and it gives me not only +5 absolutism, but 400 GC. Is there a downside to this?

Why should I make/not make the switch?
