Please check our previous Imperial Council thread for any questions left unanswered

Welcome to the Imperial Council of r/eu4, where your trusted and most knowledgeable advisors stand ready to help you in matters of state and conquest.

This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your Ironman game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the master tacticians of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your Ironman save, then you've found the right place!

Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (diplomatic, political, trade, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, ideas, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, ideas, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. Calling all imperial councillors! Many of our linked guides pre-Dharma (1.26) are missing strategy regarding mission trees. Any help in putting together updated guides is greatly appreciated! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, chances are you've used the EU4 wiki and know how valuable a resource it can be. When you answer a question, consider checking whether the wiki has that information where you would expect to find it, and adding to the wiki if it does not. In fact, anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.

Some "Post Civ V revisited campaign" thoughts

    Posted: 09 Aug 2021 09:17 AM PDT

Recently I thought what the hell let's start up Civ V after I dont even know how many years of lying dormant in my Steam library. After discovering EU4 I can assure you I hadn't played it since. So I set the game timer to the longest choice, set the difficulty to a challenging "3" and commenced as Oda Nobunaga.

The Pros: it's easy to understand this game right off the bat. But that doesn't mean there aren't a few more layers of complexity deeper. It's not close to Eu4 however.

It's aesethically pleasing if not a bit cartoonish.

I like each great power having a distinct ability.

Road networks are an interesting idea.

The idea of cultural or science victory over domination makes different strategies viable.

There's always something going on, you're always just a few turns away from something else happening be it a building or a tech or a policy.

The rock paper scissors military is easier to grasp at first than fire pips shock pips morale and discipline.

The Cons: much of what Civ V does well Eu4 does better. Great power traits are just national ideas. Strategic/luxury resources exist in both games but I like the execution more in eu4 as they aren't expendable. And let's get to the big one here. DIPLOMACY. Civ V is nearly unplayable if you expect the AI to offer a rewarding experience diplomatically.

You thought Great Britain was useless as a war power? Try needing the AI to help you in Civ V. Utter garbage. Alliances? No they are declarations of friendship and they constantly expire. And the nations are completely unpredictable, love you one day and denounce you the next. Then they will ask for open borders despite hating your guts. And if you have friends in this game they will likely ask you for half of your treasury because they've fallen on hard times.

If you refuse, they will hold it against you forever.

Then there is the war system. You have no barometer for your war performance other than how you think you're doing. I massacred dozens of Chinese armies in my game and took two cities near mine and they would not accept a white peace for several dozen turns. The whole diplo system is arcane and oblique. I do realize the irony in calling a mechanic arcane in comparison to EU4 but the diplo was by far the least enjoyable part of this game.

Civ V seems to be a game made to be played with others while EU4 offers a better single player experience. Leviathan may be disappointing but I would still much prefer to play this game than Civ. That's not to say "Civ bad EU4 good" though.

To those that have played it how does Civ 6 compare?
