An easy Brandenburg - Prussia start guide for mediocre players like me

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 04:37 AM PDT

I've been trying to get a good Brandenburg-Prussia game started. Having finally cracked a good method, I thought I'd share for anyone who's interested. I'm not a great EU4 player at all - so I'm sure there are more optimal ways to start but this is for newer players like me. Please feel free to suggest improvements in the comments!

    Starting conditions:

These are some of the things that need to happen at the start. If they don't, I would recommend restarting:

    - Make sure Poland and Austria don't rival each other - you will be allying both.

    - Make sure Wolgast doesn't ally a major power. They usually just ally a minor nation but will sometimes ally Denmark or Poland. If they ally Lithuania, that is fine because Lithuania will most likely fall under a PU with Poland.

    - If the 'Sale of Neumark' event doesn't fire before Poland declares war on them, you will need to restart.

    Opening actions:

    - Only rival Teutonic Order. This is just incase Poland allies your rival, which will make them not want to ally you.

    - Start improving relations with Poland. When they like you enough, get a royal marriage, then you will be able to ally them after a month.

    - Ally and RM Austria

    - It doesn't matter much who else you ally - just don't pick anyone rivalled to Poland or Austria. I allied Saxony for the 'Imperial Ambition' mission. Then later dumped them in favour of Denmark.

    - Set your focus to military points and hire a level 1 military advisor. This will help you get to Mil Tech 4 & 5 faster than your enemies. You won't be able to afford any other advisors yet.

    Estates:

    - For each estate, I would pick the privilege which makes them more loyal and reduces absolutism. You will be able to revoke these before absolutism matters.

    - You might want to call a diet to improve relations, but this might also make you choose an option which distracts from your goals.

    Crownland:

    - You can either seize land from the estates, or simply develop some provinces using diplo point to increase your crownland.

    War with Wolgast:

    - Build up to your force limit with infantry

    - Build a spy network in Wolgast. You will get claims on them after buying Neumarkl anyway, but it's better to be able to go to war with them as soon as possible.

    - Set your ruler & heir as commanders. Hopefully one of them will be decent.

    - When you have a claim, declare war. You should be able to win against them and 1 ally.

    - If it hasn't already, wait to buy Neumark from Teutonic Order with the event before going for peace. You will then be able to take Stolp and vassalize the rest of Wolgast.

    First war with Teutonic Order:

    - You will now have claims on Teutonic Order. You need Danzig and Konigsberg to form Prussia at Admin Tech 10. Make sure you occupy these provinces as priority.

    - Declare war as soon as you can promise land to Poland. They will join and help your war. This means they can't declare without and you take provinces you need.

    - When you win the war, take the 2 provinces and give 1 to Poland. I gave Poland the province which is not in the West or East Prussia states. Use any remaining war score for things like war reps, trade power or cancelling alliances.

    - If Poland occupied Danzig or Konigsberg before you, don't give it to them. You can take it in the next war.

    After the War

    - Chill!

    - Integrate Wolgast when you can

    - Pay off loans

    - Improve relations with angry neighbours

    - You might want to attack Stetin in this time too, but it's not necessary.

    Second war with Teutonic Order

    - As soon as the truce ends, declare war on Teutonic and call in Poland to help you. You shouldn't need to promise land, but if you need to then do.

    - Occupy their capital before Poland does

    - For the peace treaty, you can vassalize them, which stops you having to give Poland any land.

    Idea Groups

    - Now you're in a great position, have strong allies and all the land you need to form Prussia. You can basically do whatever you want from here but I'll suggest things anyway.

    - You will need Admin ideas sooner or later. The Prussian government has a reduction in governing capacity. Admin ideas will help with this as well as coring cost for taking provinces. I would suggest taking it as either your first or second idea.

    - After that, it depends what sort of game you want to play. For super powered troops, choose military ideas like Quality, Offensive or Defensive and combine with Innovative, Economic or Religious for strong military policies.

    - Or if you want to be more diplomatic, become emperor or play the game of thrones, choose Diplomatic and/or Influence ideas along the way.

Hey presto! You're ready to take on the world! I know it's pretty basic, but I hope it will be helpful to players like me who could do with a few basic tips. Feel free to discuss in the comments any improvements or if it will helpful to you =)
