Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:47 AM PDT A comment in another post got me thinking about a question that nobody asked. I thought it was a shame to let all my hard work be hidden in a comment deep down in that post, so here you go. How much is an EU4 ducat worth, and how much would it cost to hire your own personal EU4 advisor in today's money? I am at work and am bored, so lets do some napkin math A cathedral in EU4 is 300 ducats. As we all know, Cathedral cost is the base measurement of how all historical currency must be valued (don't question this, just go with it.) According to this reddit user a 14th century Cathedral cost £781 to build. EU4 takes place a century later, but let's play with that number for now. He also states that £781 back then was enough for 180.000 gallons of Ale. So we know that 300 ducats = 180.000 gallons of ale. I am gonna assume that back then, ale was about the same as a craft beer produced today (It wouldn't be fair to compare to mass produced industrial beer) According to this random australian brewery, it costs them AUD$174 to produce a keg of beer. A keg contains 15,5 gallons of beer. (I don't know if these guys use half-kegs, but in case they do, divide all numbers by 2, as a half-keg is only 7,75 gallons) So 300 Ducats = (180.000/15,5)*174 = AUD$2.020.645 Now nobody cares about australian Didgeridoo dollarinos, so lets convert that to some good old fashioned euros. AUD$2.020.645 = €1.212.760 Divide by 300 and we find out that 1 ducat is worth €4.042 euros. So about 4000 euros a month in today money for a level 1 advisor at the start of the game. (Not counting the hiring costs) Multiply this by the level of your advisor. And factor in 0,5% of base cost for each year passed since beginning of the game. So 25*1 ducat for a level 5 advisor = €101.050 a month in 1444. Or 188,5% extra in 1821 = €291.529 a month. For some comparison, the CEO of google rakes in about 50.000 euros a month. So I guess that makes him somewhere between a level 3 and a level 4 advisor (1444 edition). Step up your game Google. Chances are - that if you are working as a bureaucrat in a western country with a university degree today, you will be earning about the equivalent of a level 1 advisor (1444 edition) in real life. 576 years have passed since 1444, so that gives us an increase of 288% of base cost. In that case a level 1 advisor today would cost €11.640 euros a month. A normal member of the Danish parliament today (So what I would call a level 1 politician) earns around 12.000 euros a month (incuding pension). I give EU4 and their advisor cost realism a 10/10.
