What do mercenaries actually represent in the time period 1400-1800?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:39 AM PST

National manpower is obviously the stock of men of the correct fighting age being available to be drawn on. If you kill too many in too short a space of time, you run out, rather obviously.

How then can you, with a bit of extra gold, magic more fighting age men out of thin air? In CK2, the mercenary companies made some sense- a group of stateless soldiers that can be paid to fight and are a finite resource.

It's not like it's vital for me to know, but I would like to have a cool "immersion" reason as to why the eu4 mercenary system exists!
