New to EU IV

So the Epic store made the EU IV base game (no expansions) free.And I immediately played Castile all the way through, though it was a bit of a slog by the mid 1700's.I was a bit miffed that the Panama Canal decision was bugged...

ANYWAY, I immediately tried again as an Irish territory...and that's a little above my skill level. But I think Castile is too easy (admittedly I came in second to the Ottomans, but I basically coasted for a century).

So, given that I love trade and navies, what are some of y'all's favorite mid-tier starters?

EDIT: And what should be my first priority be AS that starter?
