Should EU5 adopt the Pops System?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 04:44 AM PDT

I have not dabbled much with Pops systems in other Paradox games—specifically Stellaris and Imperator—but it strikes me that a version of Pops mechanics might be a way to solve some of my main gripes with the game, as long as some recurring forum complaints.

    • Population growth: EU4 doesn't have dynamic population and province wealth growth. These are instead represented by development levels that only increase if the player decided to invest mana. This is decidedly unorganic, and it is entirely possible for the richest country in the world to never see its key cities and mainland prosper on their own. There is the Prosperity gauge, but this is only a multiplier of dev dependent numbers. Pops would allow provinces to see their population increase and fluctuate, and even get richer, as more of them upgrade from artisans to bourgeois and industrialists by end game.
    • Population Attrition: Except for the new Concentrate Development feature (which I have not yet tested) there is no impact on the health of a nation to being completely run over. No one dies of famine, no neighbourhoods get levelled in sieges, nothing of this kind is represented by game mechanisms. Bar some devastation that goes quickly away, you could utterly ruin for 20 years Castille and they'd be back to normal, ship shape, with Revanchism to boot, and soon as you clicked on that Peace Deal. Same thing for plagues and the like, especially in the New World.
    • New World:
      • Colonization: Speaking of. One of the annoying things about the Colonization process in EU4 is how it ultimately deals with the natives, and how ultimately historical/reasonable that is. None of the land in the Americas is actually "empty", it is just not stated, but by the time that province has been colonized it is as if the natives have vanished into the ether. We are to believe part of them assimilated into the colony, some ran away, while some were killed off—and other are just biding their time to rebel when your unrest get too high. There is possibly genocides happening that are never represented by the game in any way, and the previously existing native populations are subsumed into your Portuguese Culture Jamaica. The Pops system would allow multiple culture to exist in tandem in the same province instead of erasing the natives. Or it could let them migrate or any number of things.
      • Plagues: I am not a fun of introducing genocide mechanics into a game that hits a bit closer to home than your Space Empire Simulator, but the decimation of native American tribes by European pathogens, often unbeknownst to those Europeans, was a massive factor in the very possibility conditions of colonization. Right now there are some Plague! events that happen to natives upon meeting Europeans if they have not Reformed, but they are nowhere severe enough to represent the loss of life that actually happened. I am not proposing anything in particular here, because it would have to take more consideration and sensitivity than this post can bring, but I can imagine how Pops would make treating the matter respectfully and realistically possible.
    • Slavery: Next up on the list of horrors. I have never been thrilled with slavery being treated as a trade good. I get it, EU is not about populations and population level micromanagement. Maybe it should be, a bit? Slavery was not just a good, like baubles, that got made somewhere, traded around, and ended up in some richer person's pocket. It massively changed the demographics of two continents. It motivated wars in Africa. The influx of slaves in the Americas increased overall production, but also the risk of slave revolts (Haiti, anyone?). Considering the climate, I am sure EU5 developers are not just going to treat Slaves as another trade good and shrug. This is one path to look into.

These are just some thoughts I had. I don't want this post to become a laundry list of ideas for a mechanic that's from other games, and possibly fundamentally unsuited to EU's mission statement, so I'll leave it there. Certainly I wouldn't want any version of a Pops system to drag the game down into micromanagement madness, and to make it impossible to conquer Russia and paint the map blue.

New r/europe plays Europa Universalis IV campaign starting on Sunday, 8th of August [Sundays 18-22CE(S)T]

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 11:54 AM PDT

Hello, Salut, Olá, Cześć etc etc! It is my pleasure and privilege to announce the new EU4 campaign starting soon!

Do you think playing a Grand Strategy game spanning the time from the Renaissance to the French Revolution with your Armchair Generals could be fun? Doing diplomacy and intrigues with 80+ players? Then this is for you!

Here you can find a summary of the previous campaign.

Now, let's get to the wall of text

    SIGN UPS OPEN

Due to time and connection concerns, players from Europe are preferred, but we do have a bunch of non-Europeans playing with us.

    When do we play?

The campaign will happen on weekly sessions, every Sunday starting August 8th, from 18 to 22 Central European Time (CE(S)T).

    Rules

The Rules can be found here, make sure to read them. If any questions arise, don't hesitate to ask.

    The Discord Server

The organisation takes place through the r/europe Discord, link here.

Once there, go to #bot_commands and type in .assign eu4 to gain access to the EU4 channels.

That's where we'll make the relevant announcements, where you can find the other players for diplomacy and discussions and all information regarding the EU4 campaign. It is also the place where you can post your sick memes about the campaign, whether in image or high-quality gifs/video form.

    How do I join?

Due to past experiences, we will not be posting the sign-up form here, instead, you will have to join the r/europe discord mentioned above where you will find all relevant links in the #campaign-info channel. We are doing this to increase the likelihood of players actually showing up since in the past people would sign up through reddit but then never show up to the game, leaving their assigned Nation unplayed.

You may pick 5 nations, ordered by what you'd rather play, from most to least. If you didn't include a Steam and Discord name your pick will be ignored and you will not be able to participate, so make sure to hop on the Discord server. You may not pick more than 3 countries per continent. You may only pick up to 2 majors, the list of majors is included in the ruleset.

You may find some names you have never heard of before in the signup form, the reason for this is that we have decided to split up the Ming into ~30 custom nations! An overview of their ideas and positions can be found here.

In #campaign-info you will also find a google spreadsheet showing the current picks, don't be discouraged if your preferred country is already picked, it is NOT first come first serve. (However, only picking popular countries greatly diminishes your chances of getting a country). You can also use the "Fill" option if you don't care where to be placed so we can place you with region balance in mind.

    Do I need any DLC?

Nope! It doesn't matter how many DLC you own, the host's DLC are able to be used by the entire server! You only need a legit copy of EU4.

We are playing the "Play Europa Universalis" option, not "Steam Multiplayer" or "Nakama Crossplay".

    The Mod

Due to Paradox consistently releasing bad updates/DLC which destroy multiplayer more and more, we are playing with a selfmade mod which aims to rectify some of these errors, provide more balance while retaining regional differences and powerspikes as well as add more flavour to certain areas/religions/countries, a full changelog can be found here, the mod can be found on the Steam Workshop, link here.

I've never played EU4 multiplayer before! What do?

Well, we hope you'll enjoy your experience! This is a rather unique community in EU4 multiplayer. Besides being one of the largest groups (we usually start with ~80), we also welcome players of all skills! One important thing to keep in mind is diplomacy is a crucial aspect of our campaigns. Interacting with other players, roleplaying and such are all encouraged. The campaign doesn't just start and end Sunday, as you will likely talk with neighbours, allies and enemies throughout the weekdays. Feel free to ask more experienced players for tips and tricks. We also have a #player_guidance channel where some more detailed guides are linked, but here is a very barebones guide on what to expect, but I hope it does not scare you off, even I died several times and then they made me mod!

We hope for a good and fun campaign for everyone. PvP can and is encouraged to happen so there will be people losing, but in the end, we will try for a fair game that everyone had a good time with. There are no stakes, so don't escalate conflicts if you don't need to, and play fairly and remember to separate the player from the country.

    Anbennar

We will be running an Anbennar campaign simultanously with a short delay. TBH I'm the wrong person to write about Anbennar since I've never played it, from what I've gathered we're playing with a fan fork of the popular mod, the fan fork can be found here.

The Anbennar campaign is supposed to be super casual with more coop than pvp.

Most importantly, the Anbennar campaign will be played Wednesdays from 19:00-22:00 GMT, for sign ups etc message @Cuchulainn#7130 on Discord.

Thanks and I hope we meet on the battlefield!
