    A ducat is 1000 ducats?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2021 08:48 AM PDT

I was wondering recently what a ducat actually was, so I went through the tax collection logs of France, and found that total collection amount in cash, and goods amounted to roughly 2 000 000 livres. I then discovered that there were roughly 8 livres to ducat around 1400. This perfectly lines up with France having a total income of 250 000 ducats, or 250 ducats in-game.

Should there be a national ideas rework in eu4?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2021 10:52 AM PDT

Hear me out here. For a game focused so much on alternative history, the national ideas sets really lock you in to actual history. NIs come from what that country did during the 1444-1821 time period, not what you did during eu4's time frame (e.g the inquisition / colonization didn't happen pre-1444, but they are included in Castile's national ideas, even though you might not decide to play like that), which means you don't get to control these crucial bonuses. For me, this is pretty weird for an alternative history game.

Instead of getting bonuses for what your nation did in a separate universe, the system should be a lot more dynamic. To properly allow for the country you play as to be yours, your actions should determine what the bonuses for national ideas are. If you go for quality & offensive for prussia, you still can get your space marines. If you go colonize as portugal, you can get your colonization bonuses.

Now as to how this could actually work. I definitely think that ruler traits should influence this, as, historically, these influenced national ideas. Idea picks and policies applied should be used to determine a "focus" you went for (that focus could maybe be like ai personalities i.e admin, diplo, military, colonizer, conqueror) that would randomly give you a bonus. For example, if you go trade-economic, the "trade" focus could give you one of trade efficiency, goods produced, trade power etc. This strength could be decided by how well you are doing (like score in the ledger) e.g a weaker trade nation would get 5% trade efficiency rather than 10%.

Please tell me if you think this would be a good idea, and if you have any suggestions.
