My GF and I have owned this game since the year it was released. We have a combined ~12,000 hours some world conquests and rare achievements under our belts. We are finally walking away from it even though it is the only video game we have ever played. But we thought it be fun to give some pointers to newer and intermediate players.

    1. Focus on strengths of nation rather than weaknesses: When we both started playing we picked idea groups and conquests based on the weaknesses of the nation. Instead we both found over time it's better to strengthen your strengths. Your starting ideas and traditions for most nations can be matched with an idea group. But if you stack say quantity ideas on Russia now you've built a highly specialized nation that has a force limit hard to top even by the Ming or ottomans. Combine that with espionage and now your -AE modifier is even lower. You get the idea.
    2. Don't rely on events or chance: By far the hardest lesson to learn especially now a days where the Burgundian inheritance fires almost every game. Didn't use to before emperor it seemed. Carve your own path and if you get those events or lucky breaks treat it like a cherry on top.
    3. Don't be afraid of the Ds. Disasters, debt and diplomatic relations: When we both first started we thought our games were over when a disaster would hit or some debt we had seemed too deep to overcome. And turn off that banner for too many diplomatic relations. All of these things can be overcome generally. Don't throw away a game because of the peasants war. Most challenges aren't game ending especially after the first 100 years when you've built some power base.
    4. Finally don't quit games early on especially if you have less then 1000 hours!: Probably the most important advice We could give. All nations throughout the game have different strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes they don't show at 1444 and you need to be patient. We both agree that we would have gotten better at the game in less hours if we stuck games out because each age and period provides different opportunities. They game we feel also speeds up dramatically after the war of religions. Tech, idea groups and such come and go quick after that period.

The only thing we disagree on is strongest nation. But after playing this long we can say all nations are strong it what suits you as a player best.

Thanks EU4 for the great memories we had a blast playing it after bar nights in college, or the Sunday's after and into the real world. Best of luck to all you!

    My first world conquest :D

After nearly a thousand hours I barely managed to do a wc. Could've done it earlier but just before I killed france who was the main colonizer, his colonies all declared independence so I had to go to the new world to kill them all. I know it's not a big deal but I'm still proud of it :D
