Humiliate should be a more viable peace deal option

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 11:17 AM PST

It just seems so weak compared to the war score cost, not to mention its next to useless outside of the one age objective, and maybe a handful of nation-specific missions. Oh, and IIRC, its only available as an option against rivals, otherwise you get the even more useless Concede Defeat option. 40 war score cost for some prestige and PP, and really no negative affects to the humiliated country. Not really a good deal 9 times out of ten, I would say.

So, what can be done about this? Well, I'm so glad you asked!

First, ditch Concede Defeat all together, and have Humiliate be available against all nations all the time (keep Show Strength confined to rivals only). Humiliate gets bumped to 50 war score, but if you choose this option, you cannot take and/or release any land. You may only take money and annul treaties.

Now, why the increase in war score cost while losing the ability to take land? Because Humiliation should have some negative effects to the target nation. Think about it this way: Spain declares on some little derp, and France gets involved because France. Spain marches into Paris, and Humiliates France. Would France's allies trust them to be able to defend them if Spain/Austria/GB comes knocking on their door next? I know I wouldn't. Not to mention the nobles and other estates of the realm, they'd be a bit skeptic of their leader getting embarrassed on the field of battle. Unfortunately, nobody cares about the peasants, so they don't get a say in this.

The negative effects should definitely be punishing, but not crippling or game breaking. I'd say something like this:

    • +2 National Unrest for 10 years
    • -10% Estate Loyal Equilibrium for 10 years
    • -2 Diplo Rep for 10 years
    • +5% Liberty Desire in Subjects for 10 years
    • Immediate -10 trust hit to all allies/subjects of target nation

I feel like that, plus the PP and Prestige gain/loss, makes Humiliate a much more attractive peace deal option, especially when you're up against someone like Austria and all his little derpy friends, can actually do something harmful to them instead of just taking a pathetic fistful of cash and randomly prestige farming.

Could potentially throw something out and add in a land morale penalty, but I'm not sure on that one...Thoughts? Discussions? Amusing anecdotes?
