New Revolution mechanic is neither accurate, nor entertaining. Posted: 02 Jul 2020 05:45 AM PDT I have consider Revolution mechanic introduced in Emperor from various angles, from historical french revolution to how much it is as game mechanic. And I can't say to like it. First problem, is how revolution center works. It spawns, and that's it. Slowly converts provinces without any input from player. No options to support it or suppress it. Can't purge disloyal elements in army, exile liberal agitators to cut sugar in Caribbeans, or anything like that. The only way to stop it is to purposefully weaken yourself to trigger the revolution disaster, rather that attacking it while at full strength. Once revolutionary sentiment gathers enough strength to take over, you have "embrace the revolution" button, which is frankly disgusting feature. Entire establishment just falls over. No stab hit, no pretender rebels, no nothing. Neither player nor AI should be able to embrace the revolution without, you know, going though the process of actual revolution. Then the revolution disaster, and revolutionary zeal mechanic. Zeal is, curiously enough, represented as positive modifier you'll always want to have maximum of. This is incorrect, and more importantly, uninteresting. France had a lot of grief from the whole "revolutionary zeal". To survive as long as she did, the Republic had to go through balancing act between crooks and crazies. Crooks didn't care much for revolution, so they were less likely to do head chopping thing, but they were massively corrupt. Crazies were largely genuine believers, considerably less corrupt, but very keen to butcher enemies of revolution, whether real, suspect, or potential. It was very interesting era, with people living in it facing difficult decisons. Republic should have to strike delicate balance between the two: too much zeal, and they'd get another reign of terror (unrest, stability hits, royalist uprisings of angry peasants), too little zeal, and you get thermidore reaction (corruption, low army morale, risk of royalists winning election and voting for restoration). Instead, devs seem to assume that revolutionary zeal meant that people were really eager to pay their taxes. What finally ended this chaotic situation was Napoleon taking over, and without strongman taking over, the instability would not end. First issue could be settled by relatively simple events and decisions popping up once revolutionary sentiment starts spreading in your provinces, giving option to react to the agitation. Second can be helped by making revolution disaster triggering upon selecting of "embrace the revolution" button (can be done with minimal jury rigging). As for zeal, I that would be hardest to change, but I suppose that adding random events triggering at various levels of zeal could help to represent how non-fun it is to run a country griped in frenzy of political violence.
