In Defense of the Charter Trade Company Mechanic Posted: 18 Apr 2020 09:42 AM PDT The 1.26 Dharma expansion added a mechanic which allows nations to purchase coastal provinces in trade company regions from the nations there, in exchange for a hefty price. The price is determined by relative military strength, selling nation's opinion and attitude towards the buying nation, province share of the selling nation's development, and proximity of the buying nation's nearby provinces. This is meant to model the Feitoria "factory" system that the Portuguese used to colonize Africa and Asia. Ever since this mechanic was added, there has been an absolutely visceral hatred of it in the community. For context, read the comments on this recent post. I'm going to try to defend this mechanic, and I hope to maybe change the minds of some of you critics. The two biggest critiques are that it causes obscene bordergore, and it isn't historically accurate. Let's talk about bordergore. This is mostly a gameplay critique rather than a historical one. And I'll admit, West Africa being a rainbow of European (and Asian) trade companies can be a quite messy. But from a balance standpoint, this makes sense. It ensures that trade coming out of the Ivory Coast node (and by extension, all the trade coming out of Africa and Asia) doesn't all go straight to one European node, but rather gets divided relatively evenly between the several it can route towards. If one nation makes a concerted effort to control the entire Ivory Coast node (which the AI will rarely do), they win a massive reward: the hundreds of ducats they can push to the node of their choice. As it stands, the bordergore actually helps to keep a balance of power for trade rather than having an unstoppable Spain or England taking the pot just because they got there first. The other critique is that this feature isn't historically accurate. Surely this many nations didn't try to colonize, right? Well... The Knights in America (Technically not a TC region but my point stands) Tuscan Guiana (Also in the America's but still) In conclusion, the Charter Trade Company mechanic both improves game balance in regards to trade, and does a relatively accurate job modeling history. I think Paradox did a good job here, and I believe the criticism leveled against them to be harsh and unnecessary. [link] [comments] | ||
