    Ayutthaya Colony Names

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 07:52 PM PST

So I've seen a lot of players do a colonial game for my country (modern-day Thailand) and I had an idea to make these colony names, feel free to use them if you like!

Foreword: Ayutthaya was one of the nations that probably didn't colonize at all so I had to come up with what I think my ancestors would have called these places based on the languages of Bali, Sanskrit, and Old Thai. You may notice some names sound somewhat Indian and that's because Bali and Sanskrit originated there. Indian languages and Thai have different ways of Romanizing though, Vijayanagar for example would be Wichainakorn in Thai

COLONAL CALIFORNIA Suriyaburi (สุริยบุรี) meaning: Suriya (Sun) + Buri (City) = Suriyaburi (Sun City/Sun Land)

COLONIAL ALASKA Yenakat (เย็นอากาศ) meaning: Cold Air, also a name of a street in Bangkok

COLONIAL LOUISIANA Sakornburi (สาครบุรี) meaning: Sakorn (River) + Buri (City) = Sakornburi (River City)

I wanted to name the Thai version of New Orleans influenced by the Missisippi River and thought of a province in Thailand called Samut Sakorn (meaning: Ocean River) because the province is located on the Chao Phraya River delta. The name might be used for the colonial nation as a whole.

COLONIAL EASTERN AMERICA Watcharakosin (วัชรโกสินทร์) meaning: Watchara (Silver) + Kosi (God) + Indra (a god in Hinduism, highly popular in literature) = Watcharakosin (Indra's Silver)

This name took a while for me to come up with, I didn't want to name the colonial capital "New Bangkok" or "New Ayutthaya" but wanted something to symbolize it being a new world city, Bangkok's royal/old name is "Rattanakosin" meaning Indra's Glass, so I changed the front word to this and it sounds fitting. Bangkok is Indra's Glass, Manhattan is Indra's Silver, maybe another colonial capital could be "Suwannakosin" (Indra's Gold)

COLONIAL MEXICO Suwannakhet (สุวรรณเขต) meaning: Suwan/Suwana (Gold) + Khet (District/Land) = Suwannakhet (Land of Gold)

Inspired by the Laotian (Lanxang) province of Sawannakhet (Heaven Land) and also a lot of gold producing provinces here.

COLONIAL PERU Incalaya (อินคาลัย) meaning: Inca (literally the Inca people) and Alai/Alaya (Place) = Incalaya (Place of the Incas)

"Inca" is an easy word to spell and pronounce with the Thai alphabet, the romanization of the word in Thai would normally be "Incalai" but I think the Indian language style of romanization looks more fitting.

COLONIAL LA PLATA Mahakiri (มหาคีรี) meaning: Maha (Large/Grand) + Kiri (Mountain) = Mahakiri (Grand/Large Mountain)

The Ayutthayans would need to sail across the Pacific to reach South America, thus arriving at the coast of Chile first, they would probably see the Andes and name it this.

COLONIAL BRAZIL Wananikhom (วานานิคม) meaning: Wana (Forest) + Ananikhom (Colony) = Wananikhom (Forest Colony)

Brazil would probably be colonized by the Portugese/Spanish first before being taken over, I feel like it would be named as a conquered colony and not actually part of the country (if that makes sense)

COLONIAL COLOMBIA Tawisamut (ทวิสมุทร) meaning: Tawi (Two) + Samut (Ocean/Sea) = Tawisamut (Two Oceans)

Colonial Colombia includes Panama which borders both the Atlantic and the Carribbean, so two oceans

COLONIAL CARIBBEAN Siamese East Indies (หมู่เกาะบูรพาสยาม) Capital: Port of Siam (Havana)

Usage of the word "Siam" refering to the country started in the late 1700s so it's justified?? Also I ran out ideas how to name this lol😂

Also, EAST indies because Ayutthayans had to sail east to reach the Carribean

COLONIAL AUSTRALIA Taksinprathet (ทักษิณประเทศ) meaning: Taksin (South) and Prathet (Country)

Australia would probably be Ayutthaya's first colonial nation so I think a simple name would be fitting. Taksintaweep (South Continent) or Taksin Nakhon (South City) would be good names as well.

    Thanks for reading!
