At my parents place over the holidays I found my childhood copy of Svea Rike, the board game that was turned into a PC game and eventually gave birth to EU and Paradox.

Anyone else think there are serious balancing issues that need to be addressed in the nest update?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2019 10:50 PM PST

I've been playing EU4 since Conquest of Paradise, and I think that through all the updates and DLC added to the game, some regions/nations have been severely overlooked in terms of balance/gameplay/etc. I seem to remember a time around Common Sense where things were generally balanced (Ottomans strong early, weak late game; Ming falls apart 2/3rds of the time; Russia becomes a strong balance of power in Europe), but now it seems that balance has fallen apart. Its understandable that with so many new features and updates, some things aren't as big a focus, but I really hope that if they are saying EU4 is going to be in its final stages, that also means they're going to take a look at game balance.

Right now it seems the following problems are unaddressed:

    • Russia never seems to be the powerhouse its meant to be, it can never stop the Ottomans from pushing to far north, or Christianize the steppes
    • The Ottomans expanding into Ukraine instead of the Levant (this is really weird)
    • Ming being way too stable, and hostile Hordes just being okay with that?
    • General government reform tweaks, the biggest one being hordes becoming merchant republics (I'd at least like logic here)
    • Colonization being unbalanced, AI being unable to conquer Mexico/Peru in the games timeframe, even with an extreme tech imbalance. General incompetence with native religion
    • The Netherlands being a rump state that never seems to go anywhere?

These are only a few problems, but I'm sure there are many others that need to at least be discussed by the community. What kind of things do you think Paradox should at least try to mend?

One last thing that bugs me: National Ideas and Buffs tend to follow what new fancy "feature" Paradox has added; if they invented a new bonus or mechanic, its likely any new national ideas will contain this buff. At first (2015), I thought this was a neat way to spread mechanics around, but now its just really easy to tell when certain areas/countries of the world got updated. I suppose the only way to fix this would be a general pass over the whole game to spread ideas and re balance, but I really think it would help solidify the overall feel of the game.

Missions Expanded Dev Diary 29.12.2019 Hosokawa Mission Tree and the Kanrei

Hello There, Mission Tree Enthusiasts! I'm u/Stiopa866, the Lead Developer of Missions Expanded and today I will present some changes to the Japanese Region and showcase the Hosokawa Mission Tree. Without further ado, let us get into it.

    The Hosokawa Mission Tree

    https://preview.redd.it/8zwrri73wl741.png?width=539&format=png&auto=webp&s=2396caaa869801e97f26536868d27e4f9e58afc7

The Hosokawa Mission Tree focuses on the Onin War and the period of the so called "Hosokawa Administration" (Hosokawa Seiken) in which the clan exerted much influence on the Shogunate. There are also missions for familial issues.

One of the first mission that should be completed in the mission tree is the The Kyoto Kanrei mission:

    https://preview.redd.it/9vnlzuskyl741.png?width=344&format=png&auto=webp&s=a3e2fa8b922df9a421fc49b19bdea00d36098e55

You are probably asking yourself, what even is that modifier? Well, that brings us to...

    The Kanrei

During the rule of the Ashikaga Shogunate, there were positions of Kanrei (Shogun's Deputy) for both the Kyoto and Kanto regions. In the next major Missions Expanded update, you will be able to earn that title for yourself.

    https://preview.redd.it/q4foc42gzl741.png?width=648&format=png&auto=webp&s=df05944569c2664bf627752a94983f773d674280

To become a Kanrei of an area, you have to have the strongest out of all the possible candidates, which are daimyos with Ashikaga's opinion of them over 0, while also having their capital in the respective area.

Be careful though, for other countries can seize the title once they get a larger army than yours!

    https://preview.redd.it/lcquvxmpzl741.png?width=613&format=png&auto=webp&s=0c983fe77dd53439a204a8b6c89a5f3a44623cb9

    https://preview.redd.it/h5po98b90m741.png?width=647&format=png&auto=webp&s=65201f2171b1b5363c5bfb32ec798c08ab014ec9

Now, here's a handy map which allows you distinguish the areas of Kanto and Kyoto for yourself.

Red are the areas for Kyoto Kanrei, and the Blue are the areas for Kanto Kanrei. (Justice for Kyushu and Ezo?)

Now, you are probably wondering what the reward for the mission could possibly be. Well, here is the answer to your ponderings:

A short, yet extremely useful modifier.

    Onin War

Now, if you have played in Japan already, you probably have noticed this event pop up somewhere in the beginning of you campaign:

    https://preview.redd.it/7sdd4vjg1m741.png?width=642&format=png&auto=webp&s=822988ecaad4d90f926f9d6e8374c26ecd65d1b7

Being triggered by any two daimyos being at war, this event gives every daimyo the Sengoku Jidai modifier for 30 years. We felt that this event does not bring the deserved justice to the real-life crisis. We are planning to make the Onin War much more dynamic, and ever so slightly closer to its real counterpart.

Though, to learn more about the new mechanics for the Crisis, you will have to read one of our future dev diaries that will go more in depth.

    The End

Thank you for reading this Dev Diary! We hope you are as excited for the changes as we are and that you will share your thoughts about the new developments here, or on our Discord Server.
