EU4, thank you for being there for me, you've got me through some hard times including two divorces

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 06:40 AM PDT

My ex's say you caused the divorces, but what would they know, they don't even reduce army maintenance during peace time.

What it means for an ahistorical game like EU4 to be "realistic"

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 11:38 AM PDT

Sometimes people on this sub (including me) object to features that we think are unrealistic in EU4. Other people respond by pointing out that since EU4 is an ahistorical game, it's unrealistic by necessity. So I thought in this thread I'd briefly go over why an ahistorical game like EU4 can still be realistic.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contingency_(philosophy)

In real life, there are (1) things that happened because they were inevitable, (2) things that happened, but could've not happened under certain plausible circumstances, (3) things that didn't happen because there weren't any remotely likely scenarios under which they could've happened, and (4) things that didn't happen, but could've happened under certain plausible circumstances. Examples:

    • (1) Huge numbers of Native Americans dying of disease upon contact with Old World civilization

    • (2) The establishment of the Qing dynasty over China

    • (3) The Nazis winning WWII by exploiting advanced technology found in vaults belonging to a secret Jewish mystical society named Da'at Yichud

    • (4) Al Gore becoming POTUS

A game is ahistorical if (1) or (2) don't happen or if (3) or (4) happen. At the same time, I would call a game realistic if (1) always happens and (3) never happens. So a game can be both ahistorical and realistic: (1) always happens, (3) never happens, (2) and (4) sometimes happen and sometimes don't.

Playing Burgundy - de Bourgogne on Austria's throne, should I wait or just take the pu?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 09:47 AM PDT

It's 1556 and I fought France already and there was no Imperial incident for me (burgundy) yet so I'm not in the HRE.

I'm allied to Austria and he only has some small nations allied besides me.

Would there be any disadvantage in the future?
